If you make PVC pipes, you have almost certainly seen calcium carbonate on the formulation sheet. In most pipe plants it is precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) — a fine, white powder added as a functional filler. This article explains what it actually does in PVC pipes, and what to check before you buy.
What PCC does in PVC pipes
PCC is made by precipitating calcium from limestone, then drying it into a consistent fine powder. In a PVC pipe formulation it is not just a cheap extender. It changes how the compound behaves during extrusion and how the finished pipe performs.
Lower material cost
PVC resin is the most expensive part of a pipe. Replacing part of the resin with a well-graded PCC (such as our HB-101 at 1250 mesh) reduces the resin needed per meter, without losing the wall thickness the standard requires. For a plant running thousands of meters a day, that difference is real money.
Better rigidity and dimensional stability
Calcium carbonate raises the stiffness (modulus) of the compound. Pipes hold their shape better under pressure and during stacking, and the extruded profile stays closer to the target dimensions. That means fewer rejects.
Smoother surface and easier processing
A fine, narrow particle size gives a smoother extrusion surface and reduces die wear. It also absorbs some of the heat during mixing, which stabilises processing. For thin-wall or pressure-rated pipes, particle consistency matters more than a low price.
Which specs to check when buying
- *Fineness (mesh): 1250 mesh is common for pipes; finer is not always better.
- *CaCO3 content: look for ≥ 98% for stable behaviour.
- *Whiteness: ≥ 94° keeps the pipe colour clean.
- *Oil absorption: higher oil absorption means you need more lubricant.
- *Moisture: keep it low to avoid bubbles on the surface.
- *Surface treatment: stearic-acid treated PCC (our SFA-PCC-99) disperses better in the resin.
A note on consistency
Two bags from the same supplier should give the same result. Ask for a COA with every lot and check the numbers, not just the price. Stable specs protect your production line.
Final word
PCC is a small line on the formulation sheet, but it affects cost, quality and output every single day. If you are reviewing your filler, compare specs side by side and run a short trial before changing the whole line. Visit our website to see our PCC grades and typical values.
